Written in the form of an open letter on his website, Steve Martin's advice to Eddie Murphy on hosting the 2012 Academy Awards is too funny to not share.

For Eddie, it's his first Oscar gig, and he can probably use as much good advice as possible. It's the Oscars, not the MTV Video Music Awards, unless he and director Brett Ratner (the "Rush Hour" movies) turn it into something closer to the latter than the former.

I'm old enough to remember Eddie being very funny as a presenter many years ago, handing out the award for best picture, the last award of the night. The bit involved black actors making progress in Hollywood, no longer being forced to sit at the back of the bus, but here he was at the back of the program....you get the gist of the punchline.

Personally, I'd love to see Steve Martin as host again, as would many of my generation. He's hilarious, he's genial, and he knows how to keep the show moving. I also think he's better solo than in the Oscar-duo hosting he shared with Alec Baldwin a couple of years ago.
