How do Tulsa's June temperatures compare with last June?

Mary Jane Pankey (at right), 3, and Ameerah Kitchel, 5, play in the water at Springdale Park, on June 4 - one of the hottest days so far in June! CORY YOUNG/Tulsa World File

This blog was inspired by some of our early morning commenters on the weather forecast story.

Yes, as one of you pointed out, Summer Solstice, June 20, is almost upon us. Regardless of how you classify summer, whether it be when school is out, or in meteorological terms:

Winter: December-February
Spring: March-May
Summer: June-August
Fall: September-November

(to keep things even, notice that the four seasons are divided into three months each!)

Regardless, you can expect some warmer weather soon.

But, as we have fun with discussing these higher temperatures, let me humbly remind you what Tulsa was experiencing last June. Information, as always, is from the National Weather Service:

12 hottest days of June 2011 (in degrees Fahrenheit):
106: June 27
102: June 30
99: June 24, 25 and 26
98: June 13 and 19
97: June 3, 5, 17. 18 and 29

Now, let us compare that to 2012:

12 hottest days of June 2012 (as of June 17, in degrees Fahrenheit):
94: June 17
93: June 14
92: June 3 and 10
91: June 9 and 16
90: June 4
89: June 5 and 12
87: June 2, 13, and 15

Granted, we still have almost two weeks of June left to match ourselves with last year. However, there's one reason that Tulsa is probably not going to get 100s in June this year:

June 2012 rain (as of June 17: 3.89 inches
June 2011 rain: 1.47 inches

This big difference in rain (that Tulsa still has almost two weeks to add to still this year) is probably why the average temperature in June 2011 was 84.4 degrees, while this year's June is only 77 degrees.

So, just to keep things in perspective. It is getting hot in Tulsa, yes, but not as hot as it was last year.
