'Idol' David Cook returns to Cain's Ballroom on Oct. 13

Former Tulsan David Cook says he’ll always be a Tulsan at heart.

Though he only spent about a year here before he took off for “American Idol” and international fame, “I learned more about myself in Tulsa than anywhere else — musically and as a human being. I learned where I want to sit on this planet. I love Tulsa.”

The former barkeep and member of local band Midwest Kings has no regrets about leaving Tulsa to try his fate on the television talent show.

Heck, he racked up 11 Billboard charting tunes in one week after his “Idol” win in 2008. The only other act to pull that off was the Beatles, which charted 14 songs in one week in 1964.

Seriously.

He and singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw have teamed up for a co-headlining tour, which rolls through Cain's Ballroom on Oct. 13.

Even though the season Cook won AI was great entertainment that I thoroughly enjoyed, please think twice before using his name in the same sentence with the Beatles.

Regardless of the fact that Cook is not a legend (yet...who knows what the future could bring) like the Beatles, he definitely DOES have that claim to fame of having 11 Billboard charting tunes in one week after his “Idol” win, with the only other act having more in one week being the Beatles, with 14. Printing this FACT does not diminish the Beatles in any way, but it's a huge feat for Cook and should be applauded.

This is a very nice article, and I have to say I'm very excited about Cook's tour with DeGraw. Hoping to get a chance to see him as I saw him once live and he's an incredible singer/songwriter/musician/performer. I have both albums he's put out since winning Idol ("David Cook" and "This Loud Morning"), and they are both excellent!

Sorry but it's a silly comparison. The Beatles songs just maybe, maybe charted a bit higher than this guys. lol The only reason he charted those songs at all is simply because of Idol. Nothing more.

Barrelhouse Beat

Barrelhouse: A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.

Beat: The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.

About me: I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
