Down in
Norman, Okla.,
MAINSITE Contemporary Art is hosting two very cool events:
1. The White Walls Series improvised sound performance, produced by sound artist Jon Mooneyham. It starts 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at MAINSITE Contemporary Art, in Norman.
Mooneyham's a fixture in the Oklahoma music and art community, and his new series is an exploration of sound with no reference to any stylistic sign posts like tempo or genre. (This series will be in Tulsa in MARCH -- at the New Genre Festival! Stay tuned for more details!!)
The nature of the White Walls Series is concerned with free playing and improvisation. The performers will be full groups, and sub-groups, of both musical and physical performers.
He's worked and played with psych-rock act (and Okie) Flaming Lips for decades, and hosted a radio show in Norman which helped herald the explosive popularity of punk and alternative rock some 20 years ago.
2. Also, catch this exhibit by J. Michelle Martin Coyne and painter Jeff Dodd, which runs through March 28.
Coyne's work captures her personal experience behind the scenes of the Flaming Lips world tour in 2007 (yes, she is lead singer Wayne Coyne's wife).
From the venue's Web site: Martin sees photography as a way to capture a moment, and through a photo, the moment can be studied and clearly remembered, becoming a personal memento of the experience depicted.
Pure rock 'n' roll.
And, Jeff Dodd is a phenomenal painter, who I interviewed over a decade ago when he was commissioned to paint a mural for our state capitol. (Too bad I can't find that old interview. I tried. It was during my days at the Enid News & Eagle.)
Back then, he had set up shop in an old brick building in Enid, cheap rent, no air conditioning, and wimpy box fans and teensy high windows giving the only break from a summer heat wave while he worked. He was relentless. And oh-so-talented, creating surreal, vivid, thought-provoking works for himself while working on that mural.
Today, well, his new, hyper-realistic paintings of Oklahoma landscapes will be the focus. A spectacular pairing with Coyne.
The gallery is at 122 E. Main St. in Norman.
