Oktoberfest runs Thursday through Sunday.

You only have to travel a few miles for German food and fun at Oktoberfest, which begins Thursday.

But similar festivals are taking place all over Germany right now. A German friend tells me these festivals are as idyllic as you can imagine, with great music, roasted nuts, cold beer and apple cider. Families stroll through on the weekends or in the evenings before bedtime.

If you want to pretend you're in Germany, here are five German phrases to know for Oktoberfest. Show off to your friends or impress the people there who speak German. It's no problem finding German speakers at Oktoberfest.

1. Lass uns das Bierzelt finden.
Let's find the beer tent.

2. Ich mag die Band.
I like the band

3. Kann ich ein Bier haben?
Can I have one beer?

4. Ich haette gerne eine Bretzel.
I would like a pretzel.

5. Let's dance.
Lasst uns tanzen.

Oktoberfest
The annual festival of beer, brats and the chicken dance begins Thursday. Friday and Saturday nights are especially popular times for all things German, including polka and potato pancakes. Also look for wiener dog races, a kids area and Bavarian cheesecake to die for.
When: 5 to 11 p.m. Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday
Where: River West Festival Park, 2100 S. Jackson Ave.
