"It's All in the Game"

The new Broken Egg restaurant in Broken Arrow exclusively plays pop music from the 1950s and '60s. When we dined there recently one of the songs we noticed was "It's All in the Game."

I know you've heard it: "Many a tear has to fall, but it's all in the game..........."

We disagreed about whose version we were listening to, but I'm pretty sure it was Nat King Cole's. Nonetheless, that sent me scurrying to the archives to learn more, and the results were surprising.

The music is a composition titled "Melody in A Major," written in 1911 by Charles Dawes, who later would become vice president of the United States. Carl Sigman put words to the music in 1951, and it was recorded that year by Dinah Shore, Sammy Kaye, Carmen Cavallaro and Tommy Edwards, with Edwards' version reaching No. 18 on the Billboard charts.

In 1958, when stereo recordings were becoming more common, MGM had Edwards cut the record again, this time in a more rock 'n' roll style, and it held No. 1 on the charts for six weeks.

Since then "It's All in the Game" has been covered by dozens of artists, including Andy Williams, Robert Goulet, Cliff Richard, Jackie DeShannon, Neil Sedaka and Barry Manilow. Most interesting, Van Morrison put it on four of his albums, and it was a concert standard for him for years.
