Whoa, there! Firkin Friday isn't as racy as it sounds.
I got a Facebook message from Wes Alexander, our buddy over at Marshall Brewing Co., to let me know the Empire Bar, 1516 S. Peoria Ave., was holding a firkin Friday 5-8 p.m. Whoops. I jumped the gun, just noticed it isn't until May 20. So put it on your calendar for May 20.
Alexander went on to explain that firkin is an old English unit of measure used to define one-fourth of a barrel of beer.
"Traditionally, firkins were wooden casks that contained ale with a faucet for dispensing," Alexander wrote. "We have a new-world firkin that we fill with cask-conditioned ale and sometimes lager for special events.
"We will be using the firkin to celebrate American Craft Beer Week at the Empire Bar. Come early to watch the tapping and because the beer won't last long."
Alexander also pointed out the Empire now is a no-smoking venue.
