This week, Tulsa hip-hop musicians Kawnar (say: Conner) and P.D.A. will release a tribute to one of their favorite bands: The Beatles.

As the duo has said in its five-part "docu-series" chronicling the making of this album (posted in an earlier post, please scroll down for more), they're not trying to "better" the Beatles. It's a tribute. They've taken their most beloved Beatles tracks and added new music, new lyrics, raps, hand claps, blips, keyboards, monologues, dance beats, rock beats and more.

From the "early release" site: They spent a total of 5 days slaving over computers, keyboards and guitars. creating a 13 track mixtape from front to back. it was only fitting that the title be "A Hard Weeks Night."

During those 5 days they also had a camera running, documenting the project being made. the episode (5 in all) can be found on youtube.

FACTOID! From Kawnar and P.D.A.: March 31st, 1964 is the date that The Beatles held the top five slots on Billboard's chart: (1) Can't Buy Me Love, (2) Twist and Shout, (3) She Loves You, (4) I Want To Hold Your Hand (5) Please Please Me -- a musical first

None of those songs are on this album, though. Weird.

Standouts: "Maxwell's Silver Hammer," "Mean Mr. Mustard," "Come Together," "Love Me Do," "I Want You." There's an interesting Faith No More-type moment in "Elanor Rigby," too ... There's nary a genre or influence left untouched in this mixtape.

Playlist:
1. Because
2. Come Together
3. I Want You (feat. Hatch & XV)
4. Let it Be (feat. Bait)
5. Maxwell's Silver Hammer
6. Hello Goodbye (feat. Devo)
7. Love Me Do
8. Mean Mr. Mustard
9. Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite
10. Oh! Darling (feat. Stephanie Oliver)
11. With A Little Help From My Friends (feat. X-Cal)
12. You Never Give Me Your Money
13. Eleanor Rigby

Barrelhouse Beat

Barrelhouse: A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.

Beat: The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.

About me: I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
