This week, Tulsa hip-hop musicians
Kawnar
(say: Conner) and
P.D.A.
will release a tribute to one of their favorite bands:
The Beatles
.
As the duo has said in its five-part "docu-series" chronicling the making of this album (posted in an earlier post, please scroll down for more), they're not trying to "better" the Beatles. It's a tribute. They've taken their most beloved Beatles tracks and added new music, new lyrics, raps, hand claps, blips, keyboards, monologues, dance beats, rock beats and more.
From the "early release" site:
They spent a total of 5 days slaving over computers, keyboards and guitars. creating a 13 track mixtape from front to back. it was only fitting that the title be "A Hard Weeks Night."
During those 5 days they also had a camera running, documenting the project being made. the episode (5 in all) can be found on youtube.
Download the album:

FACTOID! From Kawnar and P.D.A.:
March 31st, 1964 is the date that The Beatles held the top five slots on Billboard's chart: (1)
Can't Buy Me Love
, (2)
Twist and Shout
, (3)
She Loves You
, (4)
I Want To Hold Your Hand
(5)
Please Please Me
-- a musical first
None of those songs are on this album, though. Weird.
Standouts: "
Maxwell's Silver Hammer
," "
Mean Mr. Mustard
," "
Come Together
," "
Love Me Do
," "
I Want You
." There's an interesting Faith No More-type moment in "
Elanor Rigby
," too ... There's nary a genre or influence left untouched in this mixtape.

Barrelhouse Beat
Barrelhouse:
A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.
Beat:
The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.
About me:
I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
