But Oklahoma novelist Tim Tharp has only been nominated for a National Book Award for his young adult novel, "The Spectacular Now." The headline that was affixed to the story we ran Thursday stated that Tharp had won the award.
Perhaps the paragraph about Tharp's book being nominated for the prize before it had been officially published made it seem only logical to our headline writer to award Tharp the award about a month prior to the official awards ceremony.
On the other hand, we did get the chance to break the news to Mr. Tharp. He called late Wednesday afternoon to say that the first word he received about his nomination was the message we had left on his answering machine.
"I've been in classes all day, so I hadn't heard a thing," said Tharp, who is a member of the English department at Rose State College. "I had a call from my editor, but she didn't say what she was calling about -- I guess it's about this award."
