Jake's Place BBQ in Bixby to close

Jake's Place BBQ, 4 N. Armstrong, in downtown Bixby will close its doors for good at 9 p.m. Friday.

Shelly and Jack Yarbrough, who were successful and veteran competitors on the barbecue cookoff trail for 10 years, opened Jake's about a year and a half ago.

My favorite item there was the pig wings, technically pig shanks. They had a short, thin bone surrounded by two to three inches of meat, and they were delicious slow-cooked in the smoker. Brisket also was a standout.

I have a friend who is extremely allergic to liquid smoke, and she loved Jake's because it didn't use it in any of its items. Liquid smoke is a common ingredient in many barbecue sauces and marinades.

I don't know why it is closing, but I suspect it was a tough location to build a successful restaurant business.

My wife and I loved Jake's. It was a bit out of the way but well worth the trip.

I am the "friend" with the liquid smoke allergy and finding BarbQ to eat is a tough one. My only haunts are Elmer's (love the short ends and the BadWich) Billy Sims (great pulled pork- and a BarBQ sauce that even diabetics can use). It is a shame Jake's is closing its doors. Their pig wings were to die for. The desserts were great homemade goodies. I hope they can reopen in a more convenient location. It was worth the trip to Bixby for a "wing".
Maybe Scott should do a piece about restaurants that take food intolerances into consideration.
