Jean Trimbach of Maison Trimbach had memorable first visit to Tulsa

Jean Trimbach of Maison Trimbach winery left a lasting impression during his first trip to Tulsa this past week. He is part of the 12th generation of the Trimbach family to produce world-class wines, dating to 1626, in the Alsace region of France.

Here are some leftover notes and quotes from his visit:

“My brother Pierre took over the winemaking from our father in 1979. My son is 20, and when he gets out of school, he will train with Pierre to take over. As long as Pierre and I are alive he will not change the Trimbach style, and he’s on the right track now.”

“Our father had to endure some tough times. In the ‘70s and early ‘80s there was only one good vintage, 1976. We’ve been much luckier. We’ve had good vintages in ’02, ’05, ’08, ’09 and ’10.”

“Our pinot blanc is what I call my 9 to 9 wine. It’s good any time of the day.”

“My gewürztraminer fell in love with the pork chop I had for dinner at the Polo Grill last night.”

“We make 100,000 cases a year and export about 90 percent of it. We are not nearly the largest winery in Alsace. We have the capacity to make 220,000 cases, but we are happy where we are.”

“Boston, Mass., is the No. 1 buyer per capita of Trimbach wines in the U.S. All of the top Boston restaurants carry Trimbach on their wine lists.”

“The great vineyards always win, even in tough times.”

“We made a wine one time, Homage a Jeanne, to celebrate our grandmother. She was born in 1900, and she drank so much Trimbach wine that she died in 2003.”

Trimbach often ends his tastings with a song, as he did following a private event at the Polo Grill and to conclude the public tasting and dinner at the Brasserie:

“My bottle lies over the ocean,
My bottle lies over the sea,
My bottle lies over the ocean,
Oh, Trimbach my bottle to me.

Trimbach, Trimbach, oh Trimbach my bottle to me, to me,
Trimbach, Trimbach, oh Trimbach my bottle to me.”

Corny, yes, but pretty funny at the end of a tasting. It also sticks in your head for a few days.
