The 1950s were a golden age of moviegoing for kids, a time when a couple of quarters could purchase a movie ticket, a soda and a popcorn -- with a little change left over.

Jenks resident Nick Aston captures the spirit of that time and that idyllic experience in his article printed in the latest "Reminisce," a nostalgia magazine with a special June/July edition entitled "Summer at the Movies."

The magazine (it's been carried at Steve's Sundry in the past, as well as other local retailers) features reader-submitted articles -- reminiscinces, if you will -- and for this edition they selected Aston's memory of attending the "picture show" in Bristow in the 1950s.

As a teen, Aston delivered monthly show calendars for the Princess Theatre in Bristow on much the same route he covered delivering Tulsa newspapers, earning him 75 cents and five free movie passes.

Aston's humor shows in several of his recollections, such as attendance of motion pictures being branded a sin by his church and others.

"I couldn't see why God didn't want me to see a great movie," he wrote in the article. "So I decided that the sin designation had to be a mistake made by some old deacons who didn't like movies or who didn't want kids to have fun."

Other such observations on Aston's part can be found in the article, along with a nifty photo of the Princess that was provided by the Bristow Historical Society.

I See Movies for Free

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
