The eighth annual MusiCares MAP Fund benefit concert will honor Alice In Chains co-founder and part-time Okie Jerry Cantrell May 31 at Club Nokia in Los Angeles.

Cantrell will be honored with the Stevie Ray Vaughan Award for his dedication and support of the MusiCares MAP Fund, and for his commitment to helping other addicts with the addiction and recovery process.

Cantrell owns a family ranch in Atoka.

Certified interventionist and Sony/ATV Music Publishing Senior Consultant Neil Lasher also will be honored.

All proceeds from the gala benefit the MusiCares MAP Fund, which provides members of the music community access to addiction recovery treatment regardless of their financial situation.

MusiCares is part of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, which also presents the Grammys.

Alice in Chains and other acts also will perform at the event. “Jerry’s role in shaping the world of rock music is profound and ongoing,” said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy and MusiCares, in a media statement.

Said Cantrell in a press statement, “From what I’ve seen, addiction can be an occupational hazard in the music business and I know firsthand how the MusiCares MAP Fund helps artists and members of the music community find the resources for recovery

“I’ve been a supporter for a long time, and I’m proud to help raise awareness and funds so this organization can continue to save lives.”

Former Alice in Chains lead singer Layne Staley died in 2002 from complications of severe drug addiction. Original bassist Mike Starr died from drug use in 2011.

Barrelhouse Beat

Barrelhouse: A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.

Beat: The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.
