MTV has announced this will be the last season of its hit reality series "Jersey Shore."
It's sixth and final season will kick off at 9 p.m. Oct. 4 on cable 39.
The end of the era for the show, which followed eight New Jersey men and women as they summered in a camera-filled house by the shore, begins at 5 p.m. Thursday on MTV, cable 39, with the special "Gym, Tan, Look Back." It will be followed by the cast giving interviews on the "2012 MTV Video Music Awards Pre-Show" red carpet at 6 p.m.
An all-day marathon of episodes featuring some of the most iconic moments in the series' history starts at 10 a.m. Thursday on the channel.
The antics of the brawling, boozing and fist-pumping group turned the reality show into the cable network's highest rated series and spawned the spinoffs "The Pauly D Project" and "Snooki and JWOWW."
It premiered in 2009 amid controversy for the use of the terms "guido" and "guidette" and its portrayals of Americans of Italian descent. On Sunday, one of the stars, Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, gave birth to her first child with boyfriend Jionni LaValle.
