TULSA TO DO
All but one of this week's picks for things to do in Tulsa are free. And, that one exception? It's just $7 for an Irish dinner. ...
You're not going to run out of things to do this weekend. It will be easy to keep yourself, and the kids, busy with happenings ...
A friend told me he had thought more about Woody Guthrie in the last few days than he had his whole life.
It's no wonder. ...

Members of Temple Israel make the food and pastries, including rugelach, for Shalomfest.

Black and white cookies are quick to go at Shalomfest, which takes place Sunday.
Here's how much I like Shalomfest: I once showed up a week early, perhaps subconsciously afraid I would miss it.
And here's how nice the people at Temple Israel are: They invited me in anyway.
Of course, I told them I appreciated the offer, but I left assuring them I would come the next weekend, when the festival was actually taking place.
My husband and I try not to miss Shalomfest, which is short by festival standards. It begins at noon and ends at 6 p.m. Sunday – one-day only.
The food is the biggest reason this festival is one of Tulsa's best. Falafel, corned beef on rye, matzo ball soup and knishes are so good you’ll wish for a place in Tulsa that made food this good all year long.
People buy the pastries by the dozens, which is why the best are often gone halfway through the festival. Black and white cookies, made by members of Temple Israel, are as good as those made at the best New York City bakeries. If you want a taste, you definitely have to come early, as they've been sold out in as early as an hour.
If you've never been to a bar mitzvah and always wondered what it was like, Shalomfest has demonstrations of this and other Jewish ceremonies. The idea is to open the doors and lift the mystery of sacred rituals.
Here's the lineup:
1:30 p.m. Torah demonstration
2:30 p.m. Bar Mitzvah
3:30 p.m. Wedding
4:30 Shofar demonstration
Tours of Temple Israel will run from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m.
What: Shalomfest
When: Noon to 6 p.m. Sunday
Where: 2004 E. 22nd Place
Cost: Free admission
