If you think Toyota was slow to respond to complaints about some of its vehicles, consider Heinz Ketchup.
In 1968 it came out with the "convenient" ketchup packet. It was supposed to help all of us folks at the drive-in or ballpark or wherever we needed some ketchup with our fries.
The invention, however, was no convenience. They were difficult to open and to get the ketchup out of. C'mon, you know you used your teeth to open that slick little package.
They were one good for one thing. They allowed the opportunity for high schoolers, at least in my day, to place one or more under a car's tire, say at the local drive-in, so when the driver backed out of his space the packet would explode and, if placed correctly, the ketchup would bomb the car in the next stall. If you were really lucky, the driver's window would be open, which afforded the possibility of getting ketchup not only on the driver but maybe even his date.
"We created the packet in 1968. Consumer complaints started around 1969," said Dave Ciesinski, vice president of Heinz Ketchup.
So, more than 40 years later and after who knows how many complaints, Heinz has changed its convenient packaging.
The new packet allows consumers to dunk their fries or whatever. I haven't tried one yet. I suppose they will work better than the old packet. But, I'll bet they don't explode under a tire as well.
