Last-chance at the drive-in

Admiral Twin Drive-in closes down for the season this holiday weekend, and they'll be screening movies through Monday night.
You know the drill: Pay one price, see a double-feature, in maybe the best movie deal in town.
On one side, the R-rated crowd can catch Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" first, followed by the excellent sci-fi surprise hit "District 9," in maybe the drive-in's best pairing this summer.
On the other side, the family can check out "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," then hope that the kiddies are asleep before the horror of "Final Destination" as the nightcap.
The Admiral Twin Drive-in is open Friday through Monday this weekend, before closing until next April for the cinema's 60th year.

Thanks for the many years of service to the genre. My fondest family memories were packing up the VW bus for movie night. I can remember the horrors of "Planet of the Apes" at a drive in in North Oklahoma City that is long gone. It had a small ride collection below the screen. None of it worked and we would climb in a train and push it around. It had a small merry go round and a very small ferris wheel that we also pushed. Then when at O.U. we had a couple drive ins that are now shopping centers. Then there was one in South OKC that's a housing addition. Then the one at the Will Rogers airport made our mom order us to look the other way. Sadly, a couple years ago the owner of the Cinema 69 in McAlester decided to close down his drive in to make more theatre parking. I saw just about all the new Star Trek movies at that screen. Since it is located near a marsh it was necessary to always take ample supplies of OFF. I also saw my first and last porno flick in McAlester. These students from OBU took me out to the Cinema 270 drive in. We saw a double feature that I will never forget. It was oriental vixen and reform school girls. They chopped it up so much it really didn't make sense. They left in just enough flesh to make it worth your 50 cents.

I See Movies for Free

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
