Tickets are now on sale for the the Tulsa Sound’s biggest annual gala.

Leon Russell’s birthday bash will be 7 p.m. April 14 at the Brady Theater this year.

It’s the 26th consecutive year the legendary pianoman’s celebrated his birthday in Green Country.

Opening act will be Glen Templeton. Russell turns 70 this year.

Raised in Tulsa, Russell once ran his Shelter Records from the Church Studio in the Pearl District near downtown Tulsa.

“The night will include special video messages from friends such as Willie Nelson and Elton John; and include performances by Templeton with Russell as his own headliner,” said event promoter Steve Todoroff.

Russell recorded on Templeton’s single “Fixer Upper.” This will be their first concert appearance together since the recording, Templeton’s publicist said.

Russell is a well-known studio musician and in 2011 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by one of his biggest fans, Elton John.

The show is all ages. Tickets are $35 and $40, plus fees, available at Reasor’s and Starship Records, in Oklahoma City at Buy for Less, by calling 866-977-6849 or online at tulsaworld.com/protix. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Russell’s performed with a string of highly successful musicians, including John, George Harrison, Delaney Bramlett, Ringo Starr, Doris Day, Eric Clapton, The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan and dozens more. He also was in the Wrecking Crew, the studio band to influential producer Phil Spector.

Wow 70? I can't believe Leon Russell is 70. He is older than I am though. :-) Early Birthday wishes Leon.

I've always wanted to see Leon but somehow the timing was wrong. But count me in this time! I've been a fan of his for about 40 years now.

Barrelhouse Beat

Barrelhouse: A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.

Beat: The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.

About me: I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
