Lightning strikes college football, part 3

The Tulsa World's Kelly Bostian caught a dragonfly (with his camera) atop a cattail as the sun sets over Hackberry Flat Wildlife Management Area earlier this month. Hordes of these apparently took over a college football game last Saturday.

A caught this tidbit in a column by Linda Robertson on the McClatchy-Tribute wire:

"There was an air of nervousness hovering over Sun Life Stadium before the game, exacerbated by a 30-minute delay caused by lightning and a swarm of dragonflies. Insects on top of a letdown following last week's victory over Ohio State — an upset opportunity for Kansas State."

Funny things just seem to happen when weather impacts college football, if you didn't notice already.

My first entry on the subject was back on Sept. 5 here, when lightning delays hit South Bend, Ind. for the Notre Dame/South Florida game and Ann Arbor, Mich. for the Michigan/West Michigan football games.

And if you didn't catch that entry, perhaps you caught part two on Sept. 20 here, when lightning and other severe weather struck right here in Tulsa when our university was scheduled to host Oklahoma State for a night game, as well as Waco, Texas where Baylor hosted Stephen F. Austin.

Round three: Miami hosting Kansas State on Saturday afternoon.

Unfortunately, no photos really showed how the weather delayed this game from what I could find on the Associated Press wire, but perhaps that's just because Kansas State is used to weather delays involving teams from the state of Florida?

That image, from Sept. 25, 2010, shows a thunderstorm approaching Bill Snyder Family Stadium during the first quarter the football game between Central Florida and Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan. Play was later suspended in the game due to lightning. (Photo credit: CHARLES RIEDEL/AP Photo)

Judging from the skies shown in this video before the game of the Miami players walking to the stadium, it really didn't look like they were about to have a weather delay, huh?

Perhaps south Florida weather is as unpredicatable as Oklahoma's.

PS: It wasn't just college football this weekend, but even the NFL was impacted by the weather. Check out these images from the Jacksonville Jaguars/Carolina Panthers' Sunday game in Charlotte:

She followed her older brother from rural Wisconsin (with a public school that never seemed to call snow days) to the University of Oklahoma, but did not follow his pursuit to study meteorology. However, she tries to find as many opportunities to report on the weather as possible.
