I am not one of the legion of Starbucks devotees. Therefore, this new offer of a $2 iced grande beverage after 2 p.m. doesn't really make my heart race, with or without caffeine.

In fact, I have been into a Starbucks only once. That was recently on a morning coffee "date." I didn't know what to order – I went with some sort of iced mocha something-or-other. That's because I drink two cups of Folgers coffee each morning while I read the newspaper in my chair at home while watching CNN. I drink no further coffee the rest of the day.

But, for the chance to meet an interesting and attractive woman of near my age, I'll show up at 8 a.m. at a Starbucks.

Not only did I not know what to order or the size of what I was ordering, I was confounded by the line in which to order and the line from which I should pick up the order. In my defense, it's not well marked.

My new friend was well acquainted with the Starbucks drill and had no problem. I, however, stood around the ordering line until my friend politely informed me that the pick-up line was on the other side. This was after she had found her order and picked it up herself. Being unfamiliar with the Starbucks lines can really make you feel like a hick. I suppose that is part of the charm of Starbucks. It's like a little club. "Let's all sit around with our lattes and laptops and laugh at the doofus who doesn’t know what to order or which line to stand in. Tee-hee."

We did get two free mini-muffins. I don't know how that happened other than my friend produced them at the table. I suppose if I were a more experienced Starbucks person I would have known about the secret mini-muffins.

The iced mocha whatever was adequate. No better than the ones at Panera Bread or Sonic. And they were a hell of a lot pricier than Sonic.

So, the 2-buck enticement won't likely get me back into Starbucks. I'll stick with Folgers and Sonic. But I wish the mega-corporation good luck with its promotion. I know it's important for a lot of people that they be allowed to spend $4 or $5 for a cup of coffee two or three times a day. So, I hope this plan helps keep Starbucks afloat.

P.S. My Starbucks faux pas must have disappointed my potential new friend. We never got together again. I'm blaming it on Starbucks and its confusing lines. It surely couldn't have been just me.
