Love letter to Wichita

Written by Danelle of Congress of a Crow, to her home town venue, the Cotillion in Wichita, Kan. (It also happens to be one of my favorite venues.) She's granted me permission to post her letter -- and her love -- for Tulsa musicians. I also humbly endorse all her suggestions as hopeful, fantastic future additions to the historic Wichita music venue's roster of talented performers.

Enjoy:

I sent this to Cotillion Ballroom in Wichita, Ks my home town.

Tulsa, Who Knew?

Bingo Casino changed my world back in my tweens. Maybe it was called Crown Bingo? It's all a blur really. I think my dad was there and watched in horror as I crowd surfed for the first time. Meanwhile, Mighty Mighty Boss Tones and Seven Dust opened the gateway to the gritty rock and roll- expirimental hippie lifestyle I have grown to love.

I just wanted to fill you in on the scene that shines a vibrant light only 2.5 hours south of witches tittie, the town that taught me strength and sorrow and ran away from so many times before i could land on my own two feet.

Please embrace the Tulsa, Oklahoma scene at Cotillion. The wichita people are searching for a guiding light and i believe that Tulsa has a huge piece of what my home is missing. Not a day goes by that I don't hear of endless tragedy happening in my small home town. Rape, cancer, spousal abuse, heartache, sorrow, depression, . . . BTK was my compliance officer for christ sakes. This town needs a revival and music is the remedy!

Below I have listed THE most soul saven-ist, mind blown-ist, brutaly bad ass bands that should most def lift the spirits of the wichita people. . . who desperatley need something to believe in these dark days. All of which are road worthy and seeking adventure.

Vandevander ~ straight up rock-n-roll don't give a damn what you think. Indie rockers who custom die and print their own merch. Load and impressive . . . dirty jeans and beards.

Sam & the Stylees ~ Reggae all the way. One love is their motto and the guitarist even saved my life once. "Lance" lead guitar was featured in Rolling Stone early this spring in a 2 page spread alongside a handfull of Tulsa's biggest bands.

My Solstice ~ If Incubus had a bastard son they would mow your 100 acre ranch. Brillant Lyrics + humble sensibilty = forever love from the local Tulsa die-hards who party every night because they know that life is short and friends are forever. ( I am secretly jealous! )

Fisrt Lady Assasins ~ They'll make you laugh till you puke and then giggle some more. An in your face, kick-box-whiskey-duel you'll never forget in the morning. Perfect kick off band for NOFX. . . . no joke.

Callupsie ~ Solid Indie Rockers with a shy femm fatal dreamy eye'd drummer, you'll forget you were on a mission to drink yourself stupid and walk away refreshed and renewed. No doubt ready to fight the cruel streets on your trusty aluminum steed.

Congress f a Crow ~ And lastly my unconditional band of boys. This alternative-prog-pop reggae influenced congress of strangers envokes the inner light of humans young and old. We search for the perfect love and are judges only of our selves. We hold each other accountable especially when it hurts. We are the true professors of friends for those who have had only had a taste of what a real family can be. We have a brutally honest love-hate, yin-yang chemistry that stands the test of time.

We cross most genres and have shared the stage with groups such as Candlebox, Paramore, All American Rejects, Shiny Toy Guns, ect . . . but are most interested in The Mars Volta, Seven Dust, Incubus and 311.

These humble citizens are the real saviors of our generation and would love to influence Wichita and restore the vibrance I once knew as a teenager.

p.s. pardon any typos. after all I am just a poor farmers daughter.

Danelle

Barrelhouse Beat

Barrelhouse: A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.

Beat: The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.

About me: I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
