Are you reeeeaaady?

Luchapalooza's back for round two in downtown Tulsa, Saturday at Elote, 514 S. Boston Ave.

The festival celebrates Mexican masked wrestling with an outdoor street party, wrestling matches, live music, kids events and food, plus proceeds from this year's event will go to Tulsa Area United Way, said Brent Ortolani, vice president of the TAUW.

The Elote Luchadors have gained a cult-like following in recent years, drawing thousands of wrestling fans to their events.

"The wrestling nights at Elote have become so popular that last year we decided to make a street festival," said Elote owner-chef Libby Auld.

"Our first year alone we had over 3,000 people attend the event. This year, with the help of Bank of Oklahoma and TAUW, we are hoping for an even larger turnout."

Blocking off Boston Avenue between Fifth and Sixth Streets, Luchapooloza runs 4 p.m.-midnight and will have 12 wrestling matches.

Live music is scheduled by Tulsa-area artists Fiawna Forte, Oilhouse, Adam Lopez & the Lo-Tops and The Red Dirt Rangers. The event is kid-friendly until 8 p.m., Auld said. Cover is $5. Children under age 12 are admitted free.

The TAUW said it is proud to be a part of the quirky and popular event.

"We have watched the success of Elote's Luchadors and wanted to be a part of it," said Dan Ellinor, senior executive vice president for Bank of Oklahoma and Chairman of the Tulsa Area United Way Board of Directors. The Bank of Oklahoma also is sponsoring the event.

What is a luchador?

Barrelhouse Beat

Barrelhouse: A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.

Beat: The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.

About me: I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
