Lucky's hominy soup

Just when the weather was turning back to the dark side recently I had an opportunity to have a tummy-warming bowl of hominy soup at Lucky's.

The soup was topped with tortilla strips and was something like a tortilla soup, only this one was filled with hominy, green chilies, chicken, melted Vermont cheddar and a bit of cilantro. It was spicy and packed with flavor.

Chef-proprietor Matt Kelley said when he and chef J. Scott VanTuyl decided to put hominy soup on the menu, they weren't sure how it would be received.

"I was apprehensive about how people would react to hominy, but it has done amazingly well," Kelley said. "And I love it myself."

Lucky's is a terrific dinner destination, but lunches are something special, too. I have an unnatural affinity for the fish tacos, and I know some who think the tuna sandwich is the best in town. The Texas quail and anything with lamb are good, as well.

And the wine list here is killer.
