Madonna -- the comic book?

I tried coming up with a pun involving comics and "Like a Virgin," but the irony probably speaks for itself.

Madonna is about to be more animated than usual.

The pop icon will be featured in a special comic book project from Bluewater Productions, a top independent production studio of comic books, young adult books and graphic novels.

Today, one day after the Material Girl's 53rd birthday, "Female Force: Madonna" will be available on select bookstores' shelves.

The "Female Force" comic series offers a broad examination of strong and influential women who are shaping modern history and culture. In past issues, the monthly series has featured, Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, JK Rowling, Ellen Degeneres, Sarah Palin, Britney Spears and Beyonce. Upcoming later this year will be the fan-suggested comic book on the icon Cher.

This comic book, written by CW Cooke and drawn by Michael Johnson, will focus on Madonna's humble beginnings and the incredible events that led to her eventually becoming one of the few people in the world recognized by only their first name.

Though she has paved the way for many female pop stars that came after her, from Britney Spears to Lady Gaga to Beyonce, she is unique in that while many are compared to her, she is never compared to anyone else, Bluewater stated in a release about the book. Even in her 50s, she remains culturally relevant, and this comic book shows the influences on her music and style that in turn have influenced every pop star who aspires to not only make songs that people will always remember but have an impact on society.

"Our goal is to show the little-known events and influences that resulted in Madonna becoming the phenomenon she remains to this day, more than a quarter-century after she burst upon the scene," Bluewater's vice president Jason Schultz told me over lunch recently (not really -- it was a mass email).

The 32-page comic book will explore all sides of this inimitable talent, from her live performances and ever-changing musical tastes to her being a leader in fashion and her charity work. It will show how Madonna has made positive contributions to her fans' lives and society at large, as well as how, despite numerous controversies, she remains beloved by more fans than ever.

The Female Force series has been featured on the Today Show, CNN, Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood and in the New York Times, USA Today, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Perez Hilton and thousands of other sites.

For more information on "Female Force: Madonna" ($3.99) and other comics from Bluewater Productions, visit your local comic book shop, Barnes & Noble or Amazon.com.

Peace, love and comic books ... XOXO

While other kids were watching "The Smurfs," Scene Writer Jason Ashley Wright was tuned in to "Style with Elsa Klensch." By fourth grade, he knew he wanted to write, and spent almost three years publishing a weekly teen-oriented magazine, Teen-Zine -- circulation: 2. After earning a degree in journalism from the University of Southern Mississippi, he became the medical reporter and teen board coordinator for the Hattiesburg (Miss.) American, a Gannett newspaper. Eight months later, with visions of Elsa dancing in his head, he applied for the fashion writer position at the Tulsa World, where he began working on Aug. 3, 1998. He is now a general assignment reporter for Scene.
