Mamma Mia! What are they thinking?

The movie version of "Mamma Mia" is bad enough -- the show works in the artificial atmosphere of a theater, but to transplant the action of this effervescent trifle onto the sands of an actual Greek isle is about as wrong-headed a move as came be imagined.

But, come Aug. 29, a new version of the film, with all the songs subtitled, will be shown in select theaters, so that fans of the movie and the ABBA songs that are its raison d'etre can "SING AND DANCE ALONG" with the film, according to the press release (alarmed capitalization mine).

Egads.

All one can hope for is that not everyone sings as badly as Pierce Brosnan......

Perhaps the idea is that if everyone is busy SINGING AND DANCING, they won't be watching. However, SINGING AND DANCING with popcorn and milk duds sounds like a recipe for a series of 911 calls rather than a pleasant, if offbeat, night out.
