Marvel at their heroes

It's as though Marvel Comics knew that "Iron Man" would be a box-office magnet, as the company on Monday released the date for its sequel following the blockbuster opening of more than $100 million in North America and more than $200 million worldwide since last Thursday.

And that's not all: Plans were outlined for several more heroes' films, plus one that would tie them all together.

The details released by Marvel:
"Iron Man 2," April 30, 2010
"Thor," June 4, 2010
"The First Avenger: Captain America," May 6, 2011
"The Avengers," July 2011
"Ant-Man," to be determined, which of course means, "if all these films hit as big as we hope, even this little-known fellow will get his own film."

It makes you wonder how fast this press release gets edited or shredded if "Iron Man" opens to $50 million or some other disappointing figure.

But that didn't happen, and Marvel Comics, which previously licensed its characters to Hollywood studios for films, must be popping a few corks at its plan to finance its own films.

Oh, and Marvel Comics has another film release this summer with its "Incredible Hulk" reboot, starring Edward Norton, coming on June 13. Until then, see "Iron Man" a few more times.

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.
