How do Tulsa's June temperatures compare with last June?

Rains improve drought conditions, but we're still on the edge

The deluge earlier this month was exciting. For a second, I though that maybe the near-record parched May was just a fluke ...

The weekend rainfall was fairly good for some areas of the state. The Tulsa area, not so much. Map courtesy of the Oklahoma Mesonet.

Didn't the storm clouds get the memo that Mayfest means excessive rain for Tulsa?

From Sunday's article:

"Tulsa International Mayfest almost had its first rain-free festival in four years, but the few drops that fell Sunday weren’t enough to affect the 40th anniversary celebration."

Now, is that a running Tulsa joke that rain always falls on Mayfest? Here's the proof (rainfall totals from the National Weather Service):

2011 Mayfest: May 17-20
2011 Mayfest rain: 1.34 inches

2010 Mayfest: May 13-16
2010 Mayfest rain: 1.39 inches

2009 Mayfest: May 14-17
2009 Mayfest rain: 1.09 inches

2008 Mayfest: May 15-18
2008 Mayfest rain: 0.13 of an inch

To add insult to injury, 2011 was our big drought season. May's rainfall last year for Tulsa? According to the National Weather Service, 3.58 inches. May's rainfall so far this year, through May 20? 0.14 of an inch.

In a nutshell, we really needed Tulsa's Mayfest to be rainy this year like it usually is, but it wasn't.

Tulsa received trace amounts of rain on Saturday and Sunday. In case you are new to the Tulsa weather scene, "trace amounts" means that we received such a small amount of rain on that day that it was unrecordable, or less than one-hundredth (0.01) of an inch.

The Mayfest rain joke might not be so funny anymore.
