Me, Walmart Shopper

I'm sure you have been in line at the supermarket and the person in front of you, for whatever reason, doesn't have enough money to cover his/her purchases. Then you wait while that person sifts through the grocery cart to put back items until the amount reaches an acceptable level.

I always found it a bit annoying -- and embarrassing -- to be stuck behind that person. Well, on a recent trip to Walmart, I was that person.

Apparently, I had failed to activate a new money card from my bank in time, and the old card, the one I tried to used for my purchases, had been denied. At least, that was the only explanation that the Walmart manager, a polite 12-year-old, could muster after being called from somewhere across the store to mediate my problem.

It then occurred to me that I had a little real money in my wallet, and my wife had instructed me to pick up some necessary items for dinner that night. So, I started the humiliating process of handing back items from my cart -- did we really need that mayo or that bag of dog food? -- until I could pay for the purchase out of my pocket.

We shop at four supermarkets for the best buys on specific items, and I chalked it up to kismet that this moment happened to me on my Walmart stop. And it was a good lesson. At least I will have more compassion when I get behind THAT PERSON again.

It happens to the best of those who mumble.

Well, at least I come by it honestly. I had all of my groceries unloaded at the checkout stand before I realized my wallet was at home. Back into the cart it all went.
