I was in the Army in South Korea on July 20, 1969, when men first walked on the moon.
Actually, at our base in northern South Korea, it was July 21, around the lunch hour, because of the time difference.
Our small base had about 300 soldiers, about a dozen Koreans attached to our unit and a handful of Air Force guys who ran a radar unit on the hill that separated us from the DMZ.
We didn't watch the little TV in the rec room much. It mostly had American shows dubbed in Korean. It occasionally was amusing to hear Hoss talk in a high-pitched Korean voice, but it wasn't amusing for long.
Anyway, we were told we could adjust our workday -- work late that day -- to go watch our astronauts do their moon walk on that little TV, so a buddy of mine from Illinois and I decided to go take a look.
I remember watching the historic event with three other GIs and about six Koreans on the fuzzy, black-and-white TV. I would like to think if the moon walk had happened a day earlier it would have been our day off and maybe it would have drawn a bigger crowd.
That's what I'd like to think.
