How about this: Steroids for everyone who wants them.
The revelation by baseball's former slugger Mark McGwire that he did, indeed, take steroids has everyone wringing their hands over the soiling of baseball.
Yes, it's a bad deal. In 1998 McGwire passed the record of home runs hit in a season set in 1961 by the New York Yankees' Roger Maris. Maris hit 61. McGwire hit 70.
Anyone who didn't know that McGwire was pumped up on something was either blind or in a serious state of denial. His arms looked like oak logs. Now, he always was a pretty big guy, but geez, can you remember what he looked like in 1998. Sammy Sosa, who was in the home-run race with him in '98, was no different.
But all that is old news. What we have to come to grips with is the use of drugs to enhance our athletes. They even have drug-testing in professional golf these days.
Here's my plan. Let's simply allow any athlete who wants to endanger their life go ahead and use steroids.
Quite honestly, the fans are just as guilty as the athletes. You want to go to the baseball park and watch a pitcher's duel – maybe a 1-0. 11-inning game? No, you want to go see guys launch balls out of the park. Maybe a 4-hour 12-10 game. Do you want to see a bunch of 190-pound guys sack a quarterback? No, you want to see a 250- to 300-plus guy get the sack. Want to see a bunch of basketball players shoot 12-foot jump shots and pass the ball four times before shooting? No, you want to see someone break the backboard with a crushing slam dunk.
Athletes use steroids to get an edge on their competitors. If they are better, we like them more and then they get paid more.
So, I say steroids for them all. If they want to risk their lives, it's their choice. They are the gladiators of the 21st century. So, more home runs, more quarterback sacks and more slam dunks. More celebrity and more money for the athletes. Then, everyone is happy.
