What new movies open on Friday? What films are going out of theaters before Friday? What's leaving but starting at the dollar theater? Some answers follow, beginning with the 10 (the biggest number any week this year) that are leaving as of Thursday night.

Showing for the last day in first-run theaters on Thursday:
Coraline, Fired Up, Frost/Nixon, The International, Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Concert Experience, Last Chance Harvey, Miss March, The Pink Panther 2, The Reader and The Wrestler.

The only new discount-house movie: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, at both Supersaver Cinema and Movies 8.

New on Friday:
Monsters vs. Aliens: in Imax, in 3-D, in 2-D, this animated flick is going to be one of the biggest hits of 2009.
The Haunting in Connecticut: the horror hits keep on coming with this based-on-a-true-story frightfest.
12 Rounds: Action/cop film with John Cena, formerly of WWE fame.
Sunshine Cleaning: Indie comedy that stars Amy Adams and Emily Blunt as sisters who open their own business cleaning up crime scenes, hazardous spills and the like.
Rebel Without a Cause: James Dean and Natalie Wood on the big screen, thanks to AMC Southroads 20's Return of the Classics series.
The Big Lebowski: Midnight movie Friday and Saturday at the Circle Cinema.

I See Movies for Free

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.
