What's new on Friday, April 24:
"The Soloist": Jamie Foxx is the homeless man and former Julliard-trained musical prodigy; Robert Downey Jr. is the Los Angeles Times reporter who tells his true story.
"Obsessed": A successful businessman has a beautiful wife at home (Beyonce, no less). But then a hot new psycho-temp at the office (Ali Larter of "Heroes") stalks him, and, well, Beyonce is not having any of that.
"Fighting": Channing Tatum and Terrence Howard star in this tale of a young counterfeiter finding trouble in New York's underground bare-knuckle brawling scene.
"Ghostbusters": If you ain't afraid of no ghost, you might want to check out the final selection in AMC Southroads 20's spring classics series, running through April 30.
"Everlasting Moments": A gorgeous period piece opening at Circle Cinema on Friday tells the story of a woman whose strength keeps her family together in 1900s Sweden, and who finds a creative outlet in photography that gives her a new vision of her life.
"Fanboys": This low-budget flick is for comic-book fanatics of the title, telling the story of five pals who try to break into George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch in 1998 to sneak a peek at the first new "Star Wars" film in 16 years.

What's new at the discount house on Friday:
Two of this year's biggest hits are the action flicks "Gran Torino" with Clint Eastwood and "Taken" with Liam Neeson, opening at both Movies 8 and Supersaver Cinema, as is "Confessions of a Shopaholic."
Movies 8 also debuts the Renee Zellweger romantic comedy "New in Town" and Daniel Craig's action-packed Holocaust tale "Defiance."

I See Movies for Free

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
