Movie showings comings and goings

What's new in theaters on Friday, May 15:
"Angels & Demons": The sequel to "The Da Vinci Code" returns with Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon, the symbolygist professor from Dan Brown's blockbuster books. He's more a man of action in this sequel, and this time the Vatican needs his help to save four cardinals who have been kidnapped just as they've been identified as the leading candidates to replace the dead pope.
Midnight showings of "Angels & Demons" for Thursday night are set at Cinemark Tulsa, Starworld 20, RiverWalk Movies and in Owasso.
"Is Anybody There?": Michael Caine in a showcase that pairs his character (the newest resident of an old folks home) with the little boy whose parents run the place. Bill Milner ("Son of Rambow") plays the boy with whom he bonds. Exclusively at AMC Southroads 20.
"Shall We Kiss?": A romantic entanglement comedy from Emmanuel Mouret, who is sort of a French version of Woody Allen, examining in provocative separate storylines how seemingly innocent embraces between friends can be fraught with tragic consequences. Subtitled. Exclusively at Circle Cinema.

What's new at the discount house on Friday:
"Knowing," the Nicolas Cage flick in which his character finds a time capsule full of predictions for the future of the world, and "Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail," the newest entry from Mr. Perry in drag, both open at Movies 8 and Supersaver Cinema.
You can get your videogame on with "Dragonball Evolution" but only at Movies 8.

The heads-up for next week: Memorial Day weekend movies get a head-start as "Terminator Salvation" opens on Thursday, May 21.

I See Movies for Free

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
