Movie showings comings and goings

Opening this Friday:
"Up" is the new movie from Disney/Pixar, and it's available in 3-D on one screen apiece if you go to one of the following theaters: AMC Southroads 20, Cinemark Tulsa, Starworld 20, RiverWalk in Jenks and the Allred 5 in Pryor. All but the Pryor theater also have "Up" in 2-D, and that's the only version you can see in Owasso, Broken Arrow, Sand Springs and in Tulsa at Eton Square and the Admiral Twin Drive-in.

"Drag Me to Hell" looks like a heckuva fright-fest from director Sam Raimi, who takes a break from his "Spider-Man" movies and returns to his roots from "Evil Dead" and "Darkman."

"Sugar" is the story of a young Dominican Republic baseball player seeking the American major league dream in a film playing at Circle Cinema (which will feature director Ryan Fleck for a live Skype on-screen interview following Friday's 7 p.m. screening) and at AMC Southroads 20.

What's new at the discount house on Friday:
"Observe & Report" is the only new dollar movie this week, opening at both Supersaver Cinema and Movies 8. This is the R-rated mall-cop movie that stars Seth Rogen instead of Kevin James, so don't mess up and take the kiddies to this one.

I See Movies for Free

“I was born a poor, black child” … not me, actually, but Steve Martin’s character in the “The Jerk.” That absurd opening line is just one of the absurd number of film facts, quotes and minutiae contained in movie critic Michael Smith’s brain, at his disposal to toss out on a moment’s notice. It’s a key requirement as Tulsa World film critic to know these things. Michael learned a few other life facts along the way (seven years as a Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti manager) before attempting journalism and joining the Tulsa World in 1996, where he’s covered everything from a school shooting in Fort Gibson to a tornado in Stroud to witnessing an execution. A little community theater coverage was sprinkled in there, too. Movies engender many of his happiest memories, from standing in line for “Star Wars” and “Grease” at the Southroads Cinema to the James Bond and Pink Panther movies that always premiered at the enormous Continental Theater.

Big winner tonight: producer Harvey Weinstein. "The Artist" wins 5 Oscars, "The Iron Lady" goes 2-for-2, even wins best documentary.
