Oklahoma noodlers take center stage when "Mudcats" launches its second season at 9 p.m. Sunday on National Geographic, cable 72.
This season, five teams fish for mammoth catfish in the Okie Hand Fishing Invitational in the muddy waters near Guthrie and a chance at the weekly $2,000 prize money per round, the $10,000 grand prize and the title best "mudcat" in the state.
Noodlers fish use only their bare hands and are usually teamed up with a second person for safety. The goal is to search underwater holes and brush piles in rivers and lakes banks that contain hopefully a giant flathead catfish and not a nest of water moccasins.
It is not a sport for the faint of heart. The only bait is the fisherman’s hand. The 10 weeks of competition was taped last July for the show.
One noodler dives under water to possiblt as deep as 20 feet to drag a catfish out of its cave, while the spotter waits above to string the beast and intervene if help is needed. It's a dangerous sport and one rookie almost drowns trying to drag a flathead out of a hole 15 feet under water, according to National Geographic.
The teams include: Don "Katt Daddy" Brewer and his longtime friend Dennis Williams; Teddy Good and his cousin Winston Walters (the "Young Guns"); defending champion Clarence "Scooter" Bivens and rookie Nate Williams, "The Catfish King" Marion Kincaid and his high-school buddy Mark Shull and "The Legend" Lee McFarlin, with more than 40 years of experience, and his daughter Misty Garcia as his fishing partner.

Rita Sherrow grew up with TV. Yes, it was the ever-present “sister” from another techno mother. At first look, it was instant "Like." From then on, the TV had to be on in every room while she studied, elementary school through college. An Air Force brat, she attended school in three states (Oklahoma, Montana and Georgia) and two foreign countries (Germany and Bermuda) and graduated from Broken Arrow High School and the University of Tulsa with a degree in journalism/advertising. She first interned in the advertising world but, when a J-School professor (who also covered politics for the Tulsa World) offered her an internship at the newspaper, she took him up on it. The rest is history. She has served as bridal editor, senior features writer for the women’s section, food editor and is television editor of the Tulsa World. In addition to writing about TV shows and interviewing the stars for “Scene” stories, she also writes a TV column for Weekend and produces the Sunday TV World listings magazine.
