My husband hates Thanksgiving – no, not the holiday itself, but the food on his plate.

Let me count the ways: He hates cold food. He hates sweet potatoes. He hates cranberries. He hates casseroles. You can see his predicament.

No matter how we plan, the food is always a little cold at Thanksgiving. I guess we’re so busy talking that the food has to wait.

Last year I tried to solve the problem by sneaking his plate to the microwave before we sat down to dinner. I didn’t consider the fact that gold-rimmed plates and microwaves don’t mix. Sparks flew from the microwave, attracting attention and ruining the china.

I can’t help him out with the others. Sweet potatoes, cranberries and casseroles are as much a part of Thanksgiving as the turkey.

I love Thanksgiving. I love all the weird foods piled on the plate. I love that everyone, even the once-a-year cook, brings something to the table.

And, I love that all of us are so genuinely thankful on this day – for family, friends and food, even if it is cold mashed potatoes.
