My husband hates Thanksgiving

My husband hates Thanksgiving – no, not the holiday itself, but the food on his plate.

Let me count the ways: He hates cold food. He hates sweet potatoes. He hates cranberries. He hates casseroles. You can see his predicament.

No matter how we plan, the food is always a little cold at Thanksgiving. I guess we’re so busy talking that the food has to wait.

Last year I tried to solve the problem by sneaking his plate to the microwave before we sat down to dinner. I didn’t consider the fact that gold-rimmed plates and microwaves don’t mix. Sparks flew from the microwave, attracting attention and ruining the china.

I can’t help him out with the others. Sweet potatoes, cranberries and casseroles are as much a part of Thanksgiving as the turkey.

I love Thanksgiving. I love all the weird foods piled on the plate. I love that everyone, even the once-a-year cook, brings something to the table.

And, I love that all of us are so genuinely thankful on this day – for family, friends and food, even if it is cold mashed potatoes.

Maybe you should try making a casserole out of cinnamon crunch bagels...

Here's hoping you have a fabulous, albeit spark-free, china-safe Turkey Day ... xoxo

Natalie,
I enjoy your articles. On our Thanksgiving trip to Muskogee, Tulsa and OKC (and Bristow) we got off the Turner to try local food in Bristow.

Russ' Ribs in Bristow, 223 South Main is very very good. As good as any of the good barbecue we eat in the Dallas - Richardson area (Sonny Bryan's, Dickey's and others). 918.640.3784.

I bet you would like it. Also, "My Place" in Muskogee is real good. They have been there for decades.

My mother-in-law has an electric roaster with three pans in it. We put the mashed potatoes, dressing, and turkey meat in it to keep them warm. Try that for Christmas and next Thanksgiving.
