When NBC airs its exclusive interview with convicted child molester Jerry Sandusky next week I hope time is taken to also interview psychiatrists, prosecutors and law enforcement personnel to balance the story.
Anyone want to guess what Sandusky, who was convicted of molesting 10 boys over a period of years, is going to say? Think he might finally break down with a full confession and beg forgiveness from the boys, their families and the university that employed him?
Those are rhetorical questions, of course.
I’m going out on a limb here and predict that Sandusky will blame everyone but himself. Sadly, there will those out there who will believe him.
I don’t fault NBC for doing the interview. Hell, if he had called me I would have been glad to hear him out.
This, however, to me is another test for TV news. Will NBC do a balanced story? Will the reporter have the time to do extensive interviews with those who can help us understand why Sandusky did what he did and why he would continue to make excuses for doing so? Or will the network simply go for the ratings via sensationalism.
I think NBC news is pretty good and I’m going to hope for the best.
But I don’t know if I’ll be able to watch it. Sandusky gives me the creeps. Child molesters are beneath comtempt. I have no sympathy and little interest in hearing his excuses. I hope he stays where he is for a long time.
