NPR cutting people, shows

Yet another sign that things are tough all over -- NPR is cancelling its "Day to Day" program, typically heard on KWGS at noon Monday through Friday, along with "News & Notes," because it's "reducing its workforce" by 7 percent.

The two shows will run through March 20, 2009.

The firings are due, according to a statement from Ellen Weiss, NPR's Senior Vice President for News, to "a loss in revenue, not relevance.'

NPR is claiming that its current audience is at record levels, but the downturn in the economy meant that the networks estimated deficit for 2009 grew from $2 million -- a figure termed "manageable" -- to $23 million.

I won't mourn that loss for long. "Day to Day" always seemed to be needlessly prone to any trick that would make it seem young and fresh. At times that led it into trivialities.

Didn't NPR end up with every penny Ray Kroc made at McDonald's. Surely they can afford anything they want.

And I quote:

"Legal restrictions severely limit expenditure of the
NPR endowment, which includes the 2003 bequest made by Joan B. Kroc."
