Need to get out of the house? 4 ideas for home-schooling parents

Philbrook's galleries become an art school in a monthly program for home-schooled kids.


The rink is open for home-schooled kids the first Friday of each month at the Oilers Ice Center.


Learn how the library's databases can help home-schooling parents and kids in a class on Feb. 7.

Home-schooling parents are more organized than ever, with support groups, challenging curriculum and extracurricular activities.

But, even the most engaged home-schooling parents need some fresh ideas.

Here are some fun classes and things to do for home-schooled kids.

Library's resources
The library is perhaps the best resource of all for home-schooling families. On Feb. 7, come to "Help for Home-school Families: Using the Library's Website and Databases" at Central Library. Children's librarians will give a hands-on demo of using the library's catalog and databases. Also learn about Homework Help Now!, the library's newest service for kids that provides online access to peer collaboration and expert instruction. Live tutors are available for home-school kids, and all kids, from 2 to 11 p.m. every day.
When: 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 7

Art at Philbrook
This one's only open to Philbrook Museum members, but it's such a great program it may convince you to join the museum. Homeschool Art at Philbrook is a monthly program to engage the home-schooling community in art education, both through exploration of the museum galleries and creation of original works. The program is offered the first Wednesday of each month (through the school year) for kids ages 5 to 8 and the third Wednesday of each month for kids ages 9 to 12.
When: 1 to 3 p.m. the first Wednesday of the month for kids ages 5 to 8 and 1 to 3 p.m. the third Wednesday of the month for kids ages 9 to 12
Where: Philbrook Museum, 2727 S. Rockford Road
Cost: $10 for members only

PE at Chandler Park
Getting home-schooled kids into organized sports isn't so difficult, but one thing you may feel they're missing out on is basic PE. The Chandler Park Community Center offers a Home-school physical education class at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Kids ages 6 to 15 can participate in games and group activities, much like school PE.
When: 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays
Where: Chandler Park Community Center, 6500 W. 21st St.
Cost: $40 for each child and $20 each additional child

Ice skating
Here's a sport you can't get at school. Open ice skating is available for the home-schooling community the first Friday of each month at the Oilers Ice Center. It's open to all home-schooled kids.
When: Noon to 2 p.m. the first Friday of each month
Where: Oilers Ice Center, 6413 S. Mingo Road
Cost: $3 per skater, includes skate rental
