Cheri Asher, owner of the Coffee House on Cherry Street, told us a good one. After noticing the former tenant, First Edition Book Store, had left behind some 33 1/3 and 78 rpm records, Asher purchased a phonograph so customers could play the old records.
"You wouldn't believe how many times this has happened when a family has come to the store, and a young person would ask to play a record," said Asher. "I just tell them to go ahead, then I watch what they do.
"They will put on the record and look closely at the dials. They figure out how to turn it on and can figure to turn it to PHONO.
"After that, they will just stare at the record going around and around. They can run computers, iPhones and all of that, but they can't figure out how to get the needle arm to the record. Isn't that something?"
