Oklahoma musicians reign when ringing in the new year. Squeeze yourself into an intimate setting, let your sequins shine and raise a glass to 2012.

1. FLAMING LIPS FREAKOUT NO. 5
Showtime 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, Oklahoma City
If you’re hitting the ‘pike to Oklahoma City, check out this two-night concert spectacular. The Flaming Lips and Yoko Ono’s Plastic Ono Band will perform Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 at the Coca Cola Bricktown Event Center, 425 E. California in Oklahoma City.

The Flaming Lips New Year’s Eve Freakout No. 5 will be general admission, 1,500 capacity. The shows are all ages. Doors open 7 p.m., showtime is 8 p.m. both nights.

Tickets also include afterparty admission into The Womb, an art gallery co-owned by Coyne, located at 25 NW Ninth St. in downtown Oklahoma City.
“In honor of our fantastical guests, The Flaming Lips will perform some classic cover songs with Sean Lennon (son of John Lennon), and members of The Plastic Ono Band, which include the great Nels Cline,” said Lips frontman Wayne Coyne in a Tweet to fans.

Cline is an American guitarist and composer, and lead guitarist of Wilco.

Coyne added: “The after party at the Womb will go till sunrise and will feature ... movies inside the Womb room and New Fumes from Dallas doing paranoid soundscapes and Stardeath and White Dwarfs playing an electric sunrise interpretation of Mahler’s Symphony No. 9. It should be the greatest Saturday and Sunday ever experienced!”
The band also promised more confetti, more balloons, more psychedelia, massive volume and, of course, maximum weirdness on both nights, including limited-run, show-only merchandise.

2. OKLAHOMA JAZZ HALL OF FAME
9 p.m.-1:30 a.m. Dec. 31, the Jazz Depot, 111 E. First St.
Wear your finest after-five attire for this jazzy ringing in of 2012. Enjoy performances by Jeremy Jackson and the Soultry Sound Band along with a guest DJ spinning old and new favorites. 3. OLDSCHOOL GETS YOUNG
Doors 8 p.m.. showtime 9:30 p.m. Dec. 31 at Cain’s Ballroom, 423 N. Main St.
One of Tulsa’s oldest venues brings in Denton, Texas, country rocker Eli Young and 2 Steps Back for a New Year’s Eve show. It is all ages. The band has kept its original lineup since it formed 11 years ago: The band is Mike Eli (vocals, guitar), James Young (guitar), Jon Jones (bass guitar) and Chris Thompson (drums). Tickets start at $25, plus fees, available at Cain’s ticket locations and by calling 866-977-6849.

4. R-R-ROCK ‘N’ ROLL PIANO
5 p.m. till close Dec. 31 at the Full Moon Cafe, 1525 E. 15th Street
Ring in ‘12 with a hot dinner (including the “world famous” tortilla soup) and a cool show with the popular dueling rock ‘n’ roll piano musicians Tom Basler and Jon Glazer. There will be party favors and a champagne toast at midnight. For more information or to reserve a seat, call 918-583-6666.

5. COSMO CAFE SPEAKEASY
9 p.m.-1:30 a.m. Dec. 31, Cosmo Cafe, 3334 S. Peoria Ave.
It’s gonna be an ab-so-lute-ly outta sight night as guys and dolls deck out in their finest retro attire, order a few stiff ones and flap till their hearts are content. Plus! Kisses at midnight, sophisticated sandwiches and other stuff all night long. Drinks include the Peppermint Patty, Hot Help!, Pomegranate Champagne Cosmo and more. 6. PDA GOES DOWNTOWN
8 p.m.-2 a.m. Dec. 31, Downtown Lounge, 25 N. Cheyenne Ave.
Heeeee’s baaaaack. Tulsa hip-hop stalwart PDA returns for a homecoming show to welcome in the new year. His guests include The X-Cal Experience, Brutally Frank and more. Drink specials all night and a $5 cover gets a champagne toast at midnight, too. Must be 21.

7. RUN OF THE ELEPHANTS
9:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. Dec. 31, Elephant Run Restaurant & Club, 3141 E. Skelly Dr.
Okay, there aren’t any elephants. But local rock act Sweatin’ Bullets will have you kicking your feet with a herd of your closest friends. They claim a stranglehold on the “concert in a club” experience with an array of kick-rump covers mixed with a smattering of originals, from Cross Canadian Ragweed to Velvet Revolver. Barrelhouse Beat

Barrelhouse: A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.

Beat: The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.

About me: I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago.
