Meet Lily, the newest character on "Sesame Street." Lily is "food insecure."
Sesame Street welcomed a new neighbor this week, named Lily. And she's meant to bring awareness to childhood hunger, namely children who are "food insecure."
According to the USDA, there were 17 million food insecure children in the United States in 2010 -- which means they may not be hungry every night, but their families experience anxiety about where the next meal is coming from.
Lily was introduced on Sunday in a one-hour special called,
Growing Hope Against Hunger, which was sponsored by WalMart.
The show offered information and tips about encouraging kids to try new foods, and how to cook healthy foods on a budget.
Sesame Street has always been a great platform to teach kids how to better relate to other kids, and hunger is a complicated issue, especially for the children affected, who are too embarrassed to talk about it.
What do you think of Lily and
Sesame Street's new message?
