Jessica Salazar, a veteran of several Tulsa restaurants, has purchased Duke's Southern Kitchen in Bixby.

Salazar bought the year-old restaurant from Tim Baker, who still operates the Brasserie and Sonoma Bistro & Wine Bar in Brookside.

Salazar, who has worked for Charleston's and Garlic Rose, among others, said she plans no major changes for now.

"We are looking to add a little more variety to the menu, but it mostly is going to stay the same," Salazar said "We have the same staff, the same menu and everything is going well.

"We are working on plans to boost the bar business and offer more drink and appetizer specials during happy hour. I also want to start being open again on Mondays. We will be closed next Monday, but after that I hope to be open all week."

Current hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. for the kitchen, up to 2 a.m. for the bar, depending on the night.

The Duke's menu was developed by Justin Thompson, who today operates his own restaurant, Juniper, in downtown Tulsa. The Duke's menu features Southern-inspired dishes such as fried chicken, shrimp and grits, fried catfish and babyback ribs.

Duke's Southern Kitchen is located at 10441 S. Regal Blvd. in the SpiritBank Event Center.

Despite mixed reviews, we tried it because of the Tulsa World review a couple of months ago. It was not a prime hour and there were only a couple of tables seated. When we entered, someone finally took us to a table, gave us a menu and a glass of water, and told us someone would be with us soon. After more than 15 minutes elapsed, and there was no further acknowledgement of our presence despite employees passing back and forth with some regularity, we decided to leave.
Doubt we'll go back unless we hear of something changing drastically.

$15 for a chicken fried steak at lunch was crazy. I doubt I would return.
