Kelsey Grammer stars as Mayor Tom Kane in "Boss," airing at 8 p.m. Fridays on Starz, cable 390. MITCH JENKINS/Lions Gate Television Inc.

Kelsey Grammer's "Boss" didn't win re-election on Starz.

The drama, which stars Grammer as Chicago Mayor Tom Kane, won't be returning to the premium pay channel for a third season, according to deadline.com.

The show was originally picked up for a second season even before the first season had aired in 2011 and earned the former "Cheers" and "Frasier" actor a Golden Globe award for his portrayal of the power-wielding political figure hiding a degenerative neurological disease while running the city's democratic machine.

"After much deliberation, we have made the difficult decision to not proceed with (a third season of) 'Boss,' ” said Starz in a statement issued Tuesday and reported by the website.

"We remain proud of this award-winning show, its exceptional cast and writers, and are grateful to Kelsey Grammer, Farhad Safinia and our partners at Lionsgate TV."

There has been preliminary discussions between the pay cable network and producer Lions Gate Television about wrapping up the story with a two-hour movie but no deal is in place.

The series wrapped its second season on October 19.

Rita Sherrow grew up with TV. Yes, it was the ever-present “sister” from another techno mother. At first look, it was instant "Like." From then on, the TV had to be on in every room while she studied, elementary school through college. An Air Force brat, she attended school in three states (Oklahoma, Montana and Georgia) and two foreign countries (Germany and Bermuda) and graduated from Broken Arrow High School and the University of Tulsa with a degree in journalism/advertising. She first interned in the advertising world but, when a J-School professor (who also covered politics for the Tulsa World) offered her an internship at the newspaper, she took him up on it. The rest is history. She has served as bridal editor, senior features writer for the women’s section, food editor and is television editor of the Tulsa World. In addition to writing about TV shows and interviewing the stars for “Scene” stories, she also writes a TV column for Weekend and produces the Sunday TV World listings magazine.
