Callupsie
Jeremy Charles
What's happening this weekend? A TON of great shows, that's what! Here's only a sampling of the best. More listings available at the NEW Spot website, look up, just above the Tulsa World flag!
CALLUPSIE

When: Doors open 9:15 p.m., show 10 p.m. Saturday
Where: Blank Slate, 230 E. First Street
Cover: $5 in advance from the band (it will get you a reduced-price, $10 copy of the new album, in a limited-edition vinyl/CD package); $5 at the door. All ages.
+ For this 2007 Spot Music Award Rising Star winner, the cosmos can't possibly contain the raw, awe-inducing intensity that Callupsie will unleash Saturday when it debuts -- live -- its self-titled, full-length first album. Fresh from a feature in Spin magazine, this rockin' indie quartet very well may be the Next Big Thing to erupt from Green Country.

It’s now ready for its 16th music release with “Lil’ Tae Rides Again,” an effervescent, well-constructed tribute to Lil Tae and his unpredictable day at school. Look for band lineup additions and other surprises at this special pre-CD-release debut. The album drops internationally on Tuesday. Hear it first (live!) right here in River City.

THE FIDDLEBACKS
When: 9:30 p.m. tonight; 10:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Crow Creek Tavern tonight; The Colony on Friday
Cover: Free
Tulsa southern rock/country/2-step hybrid The Fiddlebacks is anything but what its reclusive arthropod moniker might imply. The only way to treat a bite from this 10-legged quintet is by sweatin'. Friday's show promises extra potency: Special guest Randy Crouch – and maybe even an appearance from Dustin Pittsley.

UNITY IN THE COMMUNITY: THE FAMILY AFFAIR
Featuring Dangerous Rob and the Dogg Pound Next Generation, Lacy Jammers and more
When: 1-6 p.m. Sunday
Where: Cheyenne Park, 1601 N. Main St.

Three-time Spot Music Award nominee Dangerous Rob continues to prove his connection to the community. Sunday, he's co-sponsoring the sixth annual Family Affair event, also co-sponsored by Diane's Daycare, 1340 AM KJMO, Spot Style Shop and FREEDAM Records.
The Family Affair treats children and their families with free food, entertainment, prizes and giveaways -- all in the neighborhood where Dangerous Rob grew up. This year, the entire Dogg Pound Next Generation (of which he's a member) will make a special appearance alongside the Lacy Jammers, signing autographs and talking with parents and children.

ROCKIN' JOHN HENRY BIRTHDAY BASH
When: Doors open at 7:30 p.m., show at 8 p.m. Friday
Where: VFW Post 577, 1109 E. Sixth St.
Cover: John Henry memorabilia, to be donated to the foundation and archives. Donations to the RJH Foundation and/or the VFW also will be accepted.
Rockin' John Henry was more than a Tulsa radio personality. He helped to radically change the face of Tulsa radio. He played what he wanted -- when he wanted. His death on Aug. 10 of 2004 left many in the community stunned.
So it planned a party to help everyone celebrate his legacy.
Friday would have been his 64th birthday.
A who's-who of Tulsa music history will be there, including Guy T. Miller, Rodney Lay, John D. LeVan, Rocky Frisco, Gene Crose, Don White, Bill Holden, The Bopcats, Bill Davis, Polly Ess, Jennifer Marriott & OSO, Wes Reynolds, Steve Bagsby and many, many more.

MARK BRUNER AND HIS GUITARS

Where: Emerson Hall at All Souls Unitarian Church, 2952 S. Peoria Ave.

The re-release Bruner's benchmark 1995 self-titled album, which Bruner's remastered and added additional tracks featuring Crook himself, will be available exclusively at this show.

LEON RUSSELL
birthday bash
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Where: Osage Million Dollar Elm Casino, 951 W. 36th Street North
Cover: 20+, at the Osage Million Dollar Elm Casino Gift Shop or 918-699-7667.
+ Rock legend and hometown boy Leon Russell is throwing a birthday bash, complete with concert. Russell, a pioneer of the influential Tulsa Sound, started in music at 14 years of age. He soon gained notoriety and became a sought-after session musician, performing with such legendary artists such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Phil Spector, The Byrds, The Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra, B.B. King, Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan, to name a few. Then he headed out on the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour with Joe Cocker and became a star. His songs are still being recorded today.

THE EFFECTS
"unplugged" acoustic show
When: 9 p.m. Monday
Where: Plan B Bar, 520 E. Third Street
Cover: Free
+ A verge-of-mega-breakout band, Tulsa rocker The Effects was recently featured in Spin magazine, too ' and in Blender magazine's "Monsters of the Midwest: Starter Bands From the Heartland That We're Totally Gay For." Totally ... awesome.
The band also gigged an amazing five shows during Austin's mega South by Southwest music festival last month, carries a seemingly endless tour schedule and has a new CD in the works. What else? Oh yeah, they're all about '60s hipster swagger, too. Bonus.

Barrelhouse Beat
Barrelhouse:
A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.
Beat:
The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.
About me:
I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
