Of fallout shelters and a hamburger joint

Air raid drills and fallout shelters still hold some vivid memories for those who grew up in the early years of the Cold War. Maybe your parents built a fallout shelter or you knew someone who did.

The closest I came to anything like that was my Uncle Jack and Aunt Mabel's cellar, sunk into their backyard in Mounds. All I remember are canning jars and cobwebs, and that it seemed kind of scary down there.

I wrote an update on Ted's Hamburgers in today's Weekend section. It's in a little building on Edison Street across from Central High School. Ted's has been there since 1963. Before that, it was a drug store, I was told in a conversation I had a few years back with Pricilla Coulson, matriarch of Ted's Hamburgers.

"The drug store had this huge basement," Mrs. Coulson said. "The man who owned the drug store was afraid of the Russians and the bomb -- remember how that was? -- and the basement was his bomb shelter."

She said her family used it as a tornado shelter at times, but it has been unused for many years.

"We also had an underground stream that ran through the property, but I'm not sure if it still does. This place has quite a history."
