Is there no end to the embarrassment that Rep. Sally Kern can inflict on Oklahoma?

She proclaims to be a Christian. A lot of folks do. Some of them actually are. I don’t put Kern in that category. Too many people, including Kern, proudly claim their Christian faith and then fail to truly follow its teachings.

I know one good Christian. Actually, I know several, but I’m going to use my cousin as the example.

He is a Baptist minister in Huntsville, Ala. He has been in the pulpit at the Hillsboro Heights Baptist Church for several years. He began to notice that his flock was becoming more and more diverse. There are African-Americans, Vietnamese, Hispanic and other Asian members.

He and his deacons made a decision to change the name of the church to All Nations Church. Guess what? The majority of the minority his congregation, older white people, agreed with the change.

They had a big service on Easter Sunday. I saw photos. There was about every color of person you can imagine in the pews. All Nations Church, and my cousin, are Christians, truly. They don’t judge others. They welcome all.

And we have Sally Kern. The same woman who once announced that homosexuality was a greater threat to the U.S. than terrorism.

This time this alleged Christian lady told a stunned House of Representatives during what began as a debate over Affirmative Action in state government that minorities earn less than white people because they don’t work as hard and have less incentive.

Unfortunately, she didn’t stop there.

“We have a high percentage of blacks in prison, and that’s tragic, but are they in prison just because they are black or because they don’t want to study as hard in school? I’ve taught school, and I saw a lot of people of color who didn’t study hard because they said the government would take care of them,” she said.

If you’re going to something stupid, why stop there? She didn’t. She insulted women by saying that they earn less because “they tend to spend more time at home with their families.”

She delivered a half-hearted apology Thursday that wasn’t really an apology. She said she misspoke. Well, that’s putting it mildly.

I don’t know what brand of Christianity Kern follows, but it’s not the one I’m familiar with.

I’m not a religious person. I was brought up in the Baptist church, but it didn’t take. But I don’t judge those who are religious. I am very proud of my cousin and his work in Alabama.

Sally Kern is not in his league.

In Luke 6:45 Jesus said:

“The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.”

I wonder if Kern has ever read that verse.
