I am becoming accustomed to singers screwing up the National Anthem. It no longer surprises me when a singer forgets the words. But the performance and flub by Christine Aguilera at the Super Bowl had a new effect on me.
I was minding my business, in the kitchen making some hearty soup, paying little to no attention to the pre-game bunk when I heard her begin the song.
I was only paying half attention. I try not to listen to pop, country, blues, rock or most any other genre of singer perform our national song, although an opera singer might be interesting, but only if he or she would sing it in English. I don’t mind someone changing it up a little, maybe adding some heartfelt warbles, but I prefer that it be done the way it was written.
As that rarely, if ever, happens, I simply tune it out. Or try to.
I also am sympathetic to anyone who chooses to perform the song. Not only is it difficult to sing, the words can be tricky, especially if you happen to be nervous and there are millions or hundreds or even tens of people watching.
So, I winced a little when I heard her mess up the second verse. Then I shrugged and moved on to the soup.
But here’s the problem. And it’s one that has never happened before. I’ve heard this song screwed up many times before. But for some reason, this time it affected me personally.
The fact is, for the next four or five days, I couldn’t remember the lines to the song either. I would sing it over and over in my head and sometimes in the shower and each time I would forget the words to the second verse.
Maybe it had something to do with all that snow.
But the snow is almost gone now and I finally got the words straightened out.
From now on, I think I’ll use the mute button.
