Oklahoma Humanities Award winners announced

The Arts and Humanities Council of Tulsa is one of the recipients of the 2009 Oklahoma Humanities Awards, presented by the Oklahoma Humanities Council.

The Tulsa organization will receive the Outstanding OHC Project Award for its Chautauqua programs, which are presented in association with the OHC.

Other winners include artist Charles Banks Wilson, educators Alecia Gonzales and Teresa Potter, the ONEOK Foundation, and Charles P. Schroeder, executive director of Oklahoma City's National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.

The awards will be presented March 7 at the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City.

James D. Watts Jr. has lived in Oklahoma for most his life, even though he still has people saying to him, "Don't sound like you're from around these parts." A University of Oklahoma Phi Beta Kappa graduate, Watts has received the Governor Arts Award, Harwelden Award and the National Conference of Christians and Jews Beth Macklin Award for his writing. Before coming to the Tulsa World, Watts worked for the Tulsa Tribune.
