Award-winning Oklahoma bluesman Watermelon Slim returns to Tulsa for a solo show, Thursday night at Bobbisox, 8181 E. Skelly Dr.

Bill "Watermelon Slim" Homans has built a remarkable reputation with his raw, impassioned intensity.

Slim is a traveler, and has taken his blues all over the U.S., Europe, and Southeast Asia.

He's also performed with the late Henry "Sunflower" Vestine of Canned Heat, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, the late John Lee Hooker and in France with Champion Jack Dupree.

For more information on tomorrow's show, call 918-663-4541 or visit facebook.com/bobbisox.tulsa.

Danny J. Buck and Josh Yarbrough also are scheduled to perform. Showtime is 8 p.m. Slim performs at 10 p.m. Cover is $5. Must be age 21 or older to enter.

Read one of my older interviews with Slim as I talked to him via phone at the real blues "crossroads."

It would be worth making the show just to hear his diction.

Barrelhouse Beat

Barrelhouse: A colloquialism describing the low saloons at the turn of the century (19th) that served whiskey straight out of the barrel. It's also a reference to the type of music played in those venues. Ex: Barrelhouse music.

Beat: The time or timing. Ex: The band played with a solid beat. Also used as a term describing a reporters specific area of expertise. Ex: The music beat.

About me: I'm Okie born and raised, and have lived all over the state: Oklahoma City, Enid, Moore, Norman, Edmond and Tulsa. I am a music geek, writer, graphic designer and amateur photographer and videographer who's followed the Tulsa and regional music scene since I moved to Green Country more than 10 years ago. I've been enmeshed in Tulsa's varied and vibrant musical night life, what some of us affectionately call a modernized throwback to the Barrelhouse scene, since that time. I fell in love with it. I fell hard.
